Keeping Our Promise

The Best Phone in the History of the World

by Liam McCarthy (5th Grade - Age 10)

I had just gotten a shiny, rectangular, black, flappable, phone. It wasn't just any old phone it was my dad's phone. Not just any old phone from my dad, it was his last phone, last but best.

It was a big responsibility for me to take care of it, it isn't good why I have the phone it is just good that I have it. I found it in our junk drawer. I asked my mom if I could have it, and quicker than I expected she said "Sure!" I'm actually still surprised that she said yes. It was great, but bad-bitter, sweet-delicious, and disgusting.

The phone is one of my favorite objects in the world. Not because it's a phone, because it was my dad's. It is one of those things that you want to have. It is something you need to have. Not want. Need.

I've only had a couple memories with the phone because I haven't had the phone for very long. I do remember some memories that my dad had. Like when he would call using the inside of the phone and that would put it on speaker. So almost every night for a month we had to go through listening to who ever my dad was talking to. It was annoying, but kind of funny at the same time. I'm still not sure if he was doing it just to annoy us or trying to be funny. That's the other thing, my dad is hysterical! He could make a joke out of anything, even himself. He could also imitate anyone, especially Yoda. It was hilarious.

Another memory is when my dad went to a golf lesson in Vermont. I called him about a million times. It must have cost him a fortune. My dad is an amazing golfer. Although I never saw him play, he liked to talk about it with me. I could tell he was good because he took me to the driving range. He had by far the furthest drive. He also had the most accurate shot. He could hit any club about one hundred yards (except the putter). That is still pretty good for a golfer that plays for fun. The phone worked out great. See my dad wasn't great at texting. On this phone he could just use the keyboard. It was like a miracle.

One memory was getting my first text. Even though it was just from my mom I was really excited. All it said was "Hi Liam welcome to texting". Now I have sent and received a ton more text messages so when I receive a text I'm not as crazy. It's still a little exciting though that people would text me, because I'm ten. Not everyone around my age has a phone. It's sometimes feels like I only know 30 people. Those are all the contacts I have. The phone is the most special object I will ever have. It is special to me because it was once my dad's phone. My dad actually used it. Not touched used! He used it for a year, actually for half a year, okay half a year isn't long, but still, he used it. It's better than getting a ball hit by Albert Pujols or David Ortiz to win the World Series.

I am amazed that an electronic device would be so important to me. It isn't like getting any old phone from the Verizon store. It is like getting every phone in the world. Actually now that I think about it, it is better.
